RESTRAINTS AND ABUSE FUND ANNOUNCEMENT

COPAA has created the Stan Appell-Jean Alpert Restraints and Abuse Education Fund.

The fund will be used to create legal educational publications to enable practitioners to combat the restraint, seclusion, and abuse of students with disabilities. Abuse of children with disabilities implicates the educational and civil rights that are central to COPAA's mission. Providing educational tools about abuse will help prepare attorneys and advocates to work with families and ensure that children with disabilities receive effective educational services. Restraints, seclusion, and abuse are neither effective nor educational.

The fund has been created in fond memory of Stan Appell, Dee Alpert's beloved consort of 38 years and Jean Alpert, her mother. COPAA has received a $5,000 donation in his memory to begin this fund. COPAA is very grateful for this donation.

Stan loved children--all children--and supported work to stop their maltreatment and abuse. This fund will continue and honor Stan’s support for these efforts. It will also honor Jean Alpert's dedication to the rights of children with disabilities.
